Larger commercial and industrial properties may require switchboards to conduct electrical supplies safely throughout the facility. A switchboard is a safety device that controls the flow of electricity in the same sort of way as fuses and safety switches. It distributes electrical power feed into branch circuits while providing a protective circuit breaker or fuse for each circuit in a common enclosure.
Switchboards support electricity loads by providing power ‘downstream’ to panelboards that then sub-divide the power into branch circuits to supply smaller loads. In smaller facilities, the switchboard is called a ‘service entrance’ switchboard which is fed directly from the electrical power authority. Depending on your local electrical power provider, there may be certain requirements for this type of switchboard.
Many types of switchboards exist, grouped meter panels, domestic surface enclosures, commercial metering switchboards, and integrated facility systems. The type of switchboard you need will depend on the size of your facility and type of operation. Discuss this with Carda Electrics.
